A Closer Look at Motors in Data Centers
Efficient fan and motor selections are essential to achieving low PUE

Current Situation

Many of today's air handlers for data centers are designed for high flow rates and relatively low static pressures. The fans selected are consequently large and operate at relatively low speeds, typically 400 to 700 RPM. The problem for equipment designers, with preference to direct drive designs, is to select a motor with sufficient torque for the application, yet sufficiently energy efficient at these low rpms.

Challenge

To compound the problem, nearly all HVAC fans in data centers are driven by VFDs, where both the motor and drive efficiencies affect power consumption. In variable torque applications, such as fans, the motor and drive efficiency is a function of speed. A motor operating at less than nameplate speed suffers reduced efficiency. At approximately 50% of rated speed and below, induction motor efficiency begins to fall precipitously, significantly impacting the system efficiency and cooling costs. In the region of 400 to 700 RPM, where many HVAC cooling fans would run in an ideal design, the
combined efficiency of a premium induction motor and drive system is on the order of 75% or less!

Solution

NovaTorque motors not only achieve full speed efficiency several points above induction motors, but are able to maintain that high efficiency over a much wider speed range making them the perfect solution for data center cooling applications. Additionally NovaTorque's motors are uniquely able to handle the full load requirements of the fan as speeds near zero so there is no loss in fan performance at the lower speeds.

Results

On a recent project comparing a leading national brand's Premium efficiency induction motor to a NovaTorque PremiumPlus+ motor, a power reduction of 18% was achieved at identical operating conditions on the same VFD and air handler. This becomes quite significant on a data center project with multiple identical units operating 24 hours a day.

Improvements in energy efficiency lead to large reductions in energy bills and carbon emissions.
